In response to the ongoing turmoil in Pakistan, U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, on May 17, expressed that the United States, India, and the world desire stability in Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of stability and highlighted the need for engagement while respecting the autonomy of the Pakistani people in determining their future. Ambassador Garcetti stated, “We hope that there will not be unrest in Pakistan, and we stay engaged with Pakistan because of that. I think that serves both India and the United States and the world. And we hope and pray that the rule of law and peace will prevail over the border. But, that’s up to the Pakistani people to decide.”

During his maiden official visit to Maharashtra, Ambassador Garcetti also mentioned that he was thrilled about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the United States in June to meet with President Joe Biden. He noted that this visit would be India’s first official state visit to the United States in 14 years and only the third official state visit hosted by the Biden Administration. Ambassador Garcetti highlighted the significance of the moment in history and the potential for fruitful engagements between India and the United States.

It is important to note that while Ambassador Garcetti expressed the desire for stability in Pakistan, there may be differing opinions among Indian security experts regarding the potential for continued instability.

The relationship between the United States and India has witnessed significant growth and deepening ties in recent years. The two countries have been strengthening their strategic partnership and engaging in various areas, including defense cooperation, trade and investment, technology collaboration, and people-to-people exchanges.

Both countries have expressed a shared commitment to democracy, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. The U.S.-India relationship has been further bolstered by the signing of important agreements such as the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement in 2008 and the designation of India as a Major Defense Partner by the United States in 2016.

Economic cooperation is an essential aspect of the U.S.-India relationship. The United States is one of India’s largest trading partners, and the two countries have been working towards enhancing bilateral trade and investment. People-to-people ties have also been flourishing, with a significant Indian diaspora in the United States and a growing number of students and professionals traveling between the two countries.

Strategic and defense cooperation has been another vital pillar of the U.S.-India relationship. Both countries have engaged in joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and defense technology collaborations. The United States has become a significant supplier of defense equipment to India, and defense trade between the two countries has been increasing.

Furthermore, the U.S. and India have been collaborating on various global issues, including climate change, counter terrorism, and regional security. Both countries have also been working together in multilateral forums such as the United Nations and the Quad, a strategic dialogue between the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan.

Overall, the U.S.-India relationship has evolved into a comprehensive partnership based on shared values, mutual interests, and growing collaboration across various sectors.
